Reading AP Status LEDs:

By Keith Parsons, CWNE #3 · 2026-08-18 · originally on LinkedIn

There is no universal key for Access Point status LEDs. The same color carries opposite meaning across vendors. So the only safe way to read the light on the front of an AP is to resolve the vendor and the management line first, then read that line's own table. The color is the fastest read you get before you open a laptop, but only after you know whose habit you are reading.

Two head-on examples show why a single master sheet is actively wrong.

Solid green. On a Ruckus indoor AP, a solid green radio LED means clients are associated. On a Meraki, solid green means the AP is up but no clients have joined. On Juniper Mist it means configured by the cloud, and on Aruba it means ready and operational. Read Ruckus habit onto a Meraki and you will "diagnose" a perfectly healthy AP as starved, or the reverse.

Solid white. On UniFi it means the AP needs adoption, go do something. On Extreme Cloud IQ it means healthy on the cloud, do nothing. On an Eero it means healthy, and on an Orbi it means ready to sync. One color, four different jobs, two of them exact opposites: act versus leave alone.

That is why a good reference resolves the model line before it shows any color meaning. The structure is the whole point, because it stops the cross-vendor color collision from ever being presented as universal fact.

An AP status LED is never a single per-vendor bucket. The right model is vendor, then management line, then state, because vendors fork their own LED language by product family and firmware.

Get the fork wrong and you are reading the correct color off the wrong table, which is worse than not reading it at all. On a cloud-managed line, the behavior can also shift with a dashboard or firmware release, so a color you memorized last year may not hold.

A guessed LED meaning is worse than no meaning, because a field tech will act on it. That is the whole reason the reference marks Aruba Campus firmware-upgrading, Ruckus fault, and Extreme locate as lab-confirm instead of picking a plausible-looking color.

The status LED is your first triage read on a live AP, before the laptop comes out, before you log into anything. That speed is worth real time on a ladder or across a warehouse floor.

This is a field reference, not a guarantee. LED meanings are heuristics that fork by model line, firmware, and management mode, and can change with a dashboard or firmware release. Confirm against the exact model's official install or getting-started guide before acting on a color.
