Six iPhone Privacy Warnings, Ranked by Falsehood

By Keith Parsons, CWNE #3 · 2026-07-13 · originally on LinkedIn

Six iPhone privacy warnings, ranked from least false to most false. A thread going around names six iPhone settings that supposedly prove Apple is spying on you.

All six are real. Almost every reason is invented, ranked least to most false:

Background App Refresh: a battery setting, not tracking.

Share iPhone Analytics: noised, de-identified crash data, not "everything you do.

Improve Siri & Dictation: since 2019, audio isn't kept by default and review is opt-in.

Ask Apps Not to Track: blocks cross-app ad IDs, not location. Worth doing, for the real reason.

Personalized Ads: Apple doesn't sell your data, and the setting isn't hidden. Backwards.

Significant Locations: on-device, end-to-end encrypted, Apple can't read it. Most wrong.

Next time a thread calls a setting proof of spying, ask one question: does the toggle actually do what the scary caption says, or just something that sounds like it?
