The Sun Versus Your Access Point

By Keith Parsons, CWNE #3 · 2026-06-08 · originally on LinkedIn

The Sun bathes your body in millions of times more electromagnetic energy than every Access Point around you combined. Nobody panics about sitting near a window.

Here is the part the "Wi-Fi radiation" fear gets backwards.

Wi-Fi is low-power, non-ionizing radio energy. It cannot break a chemical bond or touch your DNA. The energy that actually does that damage is ionizing: ultraviolet, X-rays. The fear conflates the two, as if they sat on the same shelf. They do not.

Run the numbers. Solar irradiance at the surface lands around 1,000 watts per square meter. A nearby Access Point delivers on the order of microwatts per square centimeter at normal distance. That gap is millions to one. And the Sun pours down the one genuinely harmful slice of the spectrum you meet every single day: UV. The radio waves from your Access Points are not even in that conversation.

Picture the person who fears the AP on the ceiling while sitting in a sunbeam. You already know which source of radiation is doing the work.

For those of you who explain RF to non-technical clients: what one comparison finally makes the ionizing-vs-non-ionizing line click for them?
